Best Water Filter for PFAS Removal in 2026

Short answer: a PFAS filter is one whose certification or performance data sheet names PFOA and PFOS. On October 6, 2026, three in-stock options cleared that bar in the sources we could read. The Aquasana AQ-6200 lists 99.7% PFOA/PFOS reduction under NSF/ANSI 53. ZeroWater's 5-stage pitcher is described by ZeroWater as IAPMO certified to reduce PFOA/PFOS. The Waterdrop G3P800 is a tankless RO whose page says it reduces PFOA and PFOS and is certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 58 for the claims on its data sheet.

Updated October 6, 2026. EPA's two May 2026 PFAS proposals were still proposals. Amazon had no featured offer on the AquaTru listing this page used to recommend, so that buy link is gone. The APEC ROES-50 stays off the PFAS list because its certification is TDS, not PFOA/PFOS. We don't run a lab, and nothing here is medical advice.

What EPA's rules say right now

The April 10, 2024 PFAS drinking-water rule set maximum contaminant level goals for PFOA and PFOS at zero and maximum contaminant levels at 4.0 parts per trillion for each. Compliance for public water systems is dated April 26, 2029. That is the rule on the books.

On May 20, 2026, EPA published two proposals. As of October 6, 2026, EPA's own pages still call both of them proposals. The comment periods closed on July 20, 2026. Neither one has replaced the 2024 rule.

Compliance timing. The proposed extension would let eligible systems request two more years, to April 26, 2031, to meet the PFOA and PFOS limits. The 4.0 ppt numbers themselves would stay. Systems at or above 12 ppt would, under the proposal, have to use interim steps. One step EPA describes is providing pitchers and filters that are certified to reduce PFOA and PFOS. That is a utility timeline. It is not a reason to skip reading a home filter's data sheet.

Which chemicals are regulated. The proposed rescission would remove the determinations and limits for PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), and the hazard index that mixes those three with PFBS. EPA's notice says this would not change the PFOA and PFOS limits. Federal Register, May 20, 2026.

A home filter is point-of-use. It does not put a utility into compliance, and it does not treat every tap unless it is installed on the whole house. If your report lists a PFAS result, start there: how to read a water quality report.

How to read a PFAS claim

Look for the chemical names PFOA and PFOS, the standard (often NSF/ANSI 53 for a carbon filter, or the claims list under an NSF/ANSI 58 RO certification), and who certified it (NSF, WQA, or IAPMO). "Tested to NSF standards" can mean a lab followed a protocol without the product holding that certification. A long "1,000 contaminants" sentence is marketing unless the data sheet repeats it under a certification line.

Boiling is not a treatment this page recommends for PFAS. A taste-and-odor pitcher is not a PFAS filter unless PFOA and PFOS are on its sheet.

Filters whose sheets name PFOA and PFOS

Aquasana AQ-6200 (under-sink carbon)

WQA certifies the AQ-6200 to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 for the claims on its performance data sheet. The NSF/ANSI 53 section lists PFOA and PFOS reduction of 99.7% at a 0.02 µg/L challenge (20 parts per trillion). The same sheet lists lead, cysts, mercury and a VOC surrogate. Chloramine is under NSF/ANSI 42 at 91%, which is why it is also our chloramine pick.

It is not reverse osmosis. Fluoride is not on the sheet. Capacity is 500 gallons, flow is 0.5 gpm, and it needs its own faucet. Amazon's brushed-nickel listing was in stock on October 6, 2026.

ZeroWater 5-stage pitcher

ZeroWater's certification page, read October 6, 2026, says the 5-stage ion exchange filter is IAPMO certified to reduce PFOA/PFOS, lead, chlorine, chromium and mercury. The page does not print an NSF/ANSI standard number next to that sentence, so this guide does not add one. The Amazon listing for the 10-cup pitcher was in stock, sold by Amazon.

Pitchers are the no-install option. Capacity is small, and the filter life drops when the water has a lot of dissolved solids. ZeroWater's own meter is how owners usually decide the cartridge is done. Follow that, not a guess.

Waterdrop G3P800 (tankless RO)

Waterdrop's product page says the G3P800 reduces PFOA and PFOS, and that the system is certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 58 for the claims specified on the performance data sheet, plus NSF/ANSI 372 for low lead. The page also states a "99%" PFOA and PFOS reduction in its marketing. That percentage is Waterdrop's. The certification covers whatever the data sheet lists, so read the sheet.

It is tankless, rated 800 GPD, with a 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio, and it needs an outlet. It was in stock at Waterdrop on October 6, 2026. Compared with a tank system that is certified for TDS rather than sold on a PFAS line: G3P800 vs iSpring RCC7.

A pitcher with lab numbers, and a narrower certification

Clearly Filtered's pitcher performance page says the pitcher and its replacement filter are certified by NSF to NSF/ANSI 42 and 372. The same page reports additional laboratory results, including PFOA at 99.64% and PFOS at greater than 99.80%, from testing Clearly Filtered says followed NSF/ANSI protocols where a protocol existed. The page also says not every contaminant in that table had an NSF/ANSI protocol. Those percentages are lab results on the page. They are not the NSF certification line, which is 42 and 372.

NSF/ANSI 42 is taste, odor and chlorine. NSF/ANSI 372 is lead-free materials. If you want the certification line itself to name PFOA and PFOS, choose the AQ-6200 or take ZeroWater's IAPMO statement. If you want this pitcher, buy it for the 42 and 372 certification plus the published lab table, and re-check the page because Clearly Filtered dates the testing November 2025. The Amazon listing was in stock on October 6, 2026. Capacity on that performance page is 100 gallons.

What this page no longer recommends for PFAS

APEC ROES-50. It is a 5-stage tank RO, and it is certified to NSF/ANSI 58. The certification that has been checked for this model is TDS reduction, not PFOA/PFOS. An RO membrane can reduce many dissolved substances. That possibility is not a certification. The older version of this article ranked it as a PFAS install. That overstated the listing.

iSpring RCC7. Same issue. iSpring certifies it to NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS and also markets a contaminant list that includes PFAS. The comparison with the G3P800 is here: tankless vs tank. Buy the RCC7 for the TDS certification and the no-power install, not as a PFAS certificate.

AquaTru on Amazon. Earlier copies of this page sent readers to ASIN B0C36HFC5Q as a countertop RO with an IAPMO listing. On October 6, 2026 that Amazon page showed the Carafe Alkaline model and no featured offer. This page does not link a listing you cannot buy. AquaTru's own site is the place to confirm which current model holds which IAPMO certificate.

Gravity filters, including Berkey. This page does not treat a Berkey as NSF/ANSI 53 certified for PFOA/PFOS. Berkey publishes its own test reports. Those reports are not a certifier listing, and this update does not repeat a removal percentage we did not re-read from a current report.

A certification you cannot find. If the box says "reduces chemicals" and the data sheet never says PFOA or PFOS, it is not a pick on this page.

A May 2026 proposal would let eligible systems ask for an extension to April 26, 2031. Another would drop PFHxS, PFNA, GenX and the hazard index. Both were still proposals.

Does reverse osmosis automatically mean PFAS certification?

No. NSF/ANSI 58 can be limited to TDS. Check the data sheet for PFOA and PFOS.

Do pitcher filters remove PFAS?

Only when the certification says so. ZeroWater's 5-stage filter is the pitcher here with an IAPMO statement that names PFOA/PFOS. Clearly Filtered's NSF certification line is standards 42 and 372, with PFOA and PFOS in a separate lab table.
