AquaTru Reverse Osmosis Review: A Comprehensive Look at This Countertop System
On this page
Short answer: the AquaTru is the easiest way to get certified reverse osmosis without touching your plumbing. It plugs into an outlet, sits on the counter, and AquaTru lists IAPMO R&T certification to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, 372 and 401. It's our top pick for renters. Homeowners who can install under the sink will usually be happier with an on-demand tankless RO like the Waterdrop G3P800.
Updated October 1, 2026: we rebuilt this review from AquaTru's current performance data sheet and specification sheet, removed first-person "our experience" language that contradicted our no-lab policy, removed a comparison table that wasn't rendering, and re-checked both links. Both were in stock on the day of this update. We have not lab-tested the AquaTru ourselves.
What it is
The AquaTru Carafe is a countertop reverse osmosis purifier. You fill a removable tank with tap water, and the unit pushes it through its filter set (AquaTru describes it as 4-stage) into a glass carafe:
- Pre/carbon filter (sediment and carbon stages in one cartridge): sediment, chlorine
- Reverse osmosis membrane: dissolved solids and the broad set of contaminants RO reduces
- VOC carbon filter: organic chemicals and taste. An optional "pH+ Mineral Boost" version adds minerals.
The Amazon listing we link describes it as a 4-stage RO with alkaline mineral boost, "tested and certified to NSF standards by IAPMO."
Certifications and claims
According to AquaTru's performance data sheet, Carafe models AT100, AT110, AT120, AT130 and AT140 are certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, 372 and 401 for the reduction claims listed on that sheet. In plain terms:
- NSF/ANSI 58: the reverse osmosis standard (TDS and the RO-specific claims)
- NSF/ANSI 53: health-effect claims such as lead
- NSF/ANSI 42: aesthetic claims such as chlorine taste and odor
- NSF/ANSI 401: emerging contaminants (some pharmaceuticals and chemicals)
- NSF/ANSI 372: lead-free materials
The data sheet also notes the usual caveats: performance can vary with your water, it's for cold water only, and not every listed contaminant will be in your tap water. Check the sheet for any single contaminant, such as fluoride or PFOA/PFOS, before buying for it. NSF's guidance on PFAS is that NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 are the relevant standards.
Filter life and maintenance
From AquaTru's data sheet:
- Pre/carbon filter: every 6 months or 300 gallons
- VOC filter (or VOC with pH+ Mineral Boost): every 12 months or 300 gallons
- RO membrane: every 24 months or 600 gallons. The Amazon listing for the alkaline bundle says 1 year / 600 gallons, so follow the indicator on your unit.
AquaTru's manual also says to replace the RO filter early if one tank takes longer than 30 minutes to filter, and to discard the first tanks after installing new filters. Very hard water can slow filtering.
Who it suits
Good fit:
- Renters, dorms and apartments where you can't drill a sink
- Anyone who wants RO for drinking and coffee without a plumber
- Kitchens with no outlet or no space under the sink
Less good fit:
- Large households that want filtered water on demand from a faucet
- Anyone who won't refill a tank daily
- Counters with no free outlet
AquaTru vs. under-sink RO
- AquaTru: no install, portable, fill by hand, rated for about 54 GPD of production
- Waterdrop G3P800: under-sink, tankless, 800 GPD on demand from its own faucet, 3:1 pure-to-drain, certified to NSF/ANSI 58. Needs an outlet and a faucet hole.

Frequently asked questions
Is AquaTru real reverse osmosis?
Yes. AquaTru Carafe models AT100 to AT140 are certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 58, the reverse osmosis standard, as well as NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 372 and 401, for the claims on the performance data sheet.
How often do AquaTru filters need replacing?
Per AquaTru's data sheet: pre/carbon filter every 6 months or 300 gallons, VOC filter every 12 months or 300 gallons, and RO membrane every 24 months or 600 gallons, whichever comes first. The unit's indicator lights track usage.
How much water can AquaTru make per day?
AquaTru's specification sheet lists a daily production rate of 54 gallons per day. In practice you refill the tap-water tank by hand, so for a large household the limit is how often you refill it.
AquaTru or an under-sink RO?
AquaTru suits renters and anyone who can't drill or plumb. If you own your home and have an outlet under the sink, a tankless under-sink RO such as the Waterdrop G3P800 delivers on-demand water from a faucet with no refilling.
